2(5H)-Furanone (γ-Crotonolactone) is an endogenous metabolite. 2(5H)-Furanone is present in a wide variety of biologically active natural products. 2(5H)-Furanone can undergo oraganocatalytic asymmetric direct vinylogous aldo reactions to provide diastereomerically and enantiomerically enriched 5-substituted 2(5H) furanones[1][2].
