In ResNet Explore database, miRNA belongs to the protein entity category. By default, the miRNA shape is an ellipse, the generic protein shape in ResNet.

To attribute a specific shape to all miRNAs in the ResNet Explore database perform the following steps:

1. Browse the miRNAs folder in the Molecular function section of the Ariadne Ontology (Figure 1).

2. Create a new group and copy in the new group all the members of the miRNAs folder and sub-folders (Figure 2).

3. Save the new group and name it miRNA (Figure 2).

4. Create a new pathway and copy in the new pathway at least one miRNA.

5. Select a miRNA in the pathway and select Style > Save Style to Active Style Sheet As > Choose Groups Used for Styling (Figure 3).

6. In the pop-up window, click on the ‘Browse Groups’ button and select the group miRNA previously created (Figure 4). Click on OK.

7. Change the shape of the new protein subcategory called miRNA [i.e. Select the shape III-vertex] (Figure 5). Click OK.

8. Now all miRNAs in your database will be displayed with the new defined shape (style) and the new protein sub-category is reported in the palette tab (Figure 6).
